Accessible Information Standard

The aim of the Accessible Information Standard is to make sure that people who have a disability, impairment or sensory loss get information that they can access and understand, and any communication support that they need.

The Accessible Information Standard tells organisations how they should make sure that patients and service users, and their carers and parents, can access and understand the information they are given. This includes making sure that people get information in different formats if they need it, for example in large print, braille, easy read or via email. The Accessible Information Standard also tells organisations how they should make sure that people get any support with communication that they need, for example support from a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter, deafblind manual interpreter or an advocate.

How does NHS Gloucestershire meet these requirements?

NHS Gloucestershire works with local NHS providers to ensure they meet the requirements of the Standard. As a GP member-led organisation, we provide an Interpretation and Translation service for all of our practices to ensure that people, for whom English is not their first language, are fully involved in decisions about their care.  We aim to ensure that all of the information produced by the ICB is accessible and available in alternative formats, e.g. our website meets recognised good practice; we respond to requests for information in large print.

Further information about the Standard is available on the NHS England website.

Sharing your experiences

We collect and record the experiences of local people and communities, and our staff, using them to shape local services and support.

Tell us your story

We want to encourage you tell us your stories so that we can learn from your real experiences about what went well, what could have been improved and get new ideas. It is our intention to begin each ICB Board meeting with a story.

Listening to stories told by people who have experience of using services is very powerful. Stories can be used to emphasize why quality improvement initiatives are important, help us to discuss the difficult decisions, personal circumstances, and values that people’s experiences bring to health and care.
